GENERAL QUESTIONS, INCLUDING SEARCHING, DOWNLOADING, AND SOUND FORMAT QUESTIONS

01:How does the Sonomic Online Library work?

The Sonomic Online Library is the fastest and easiest way to get new sounds right when you need them. With Sonomic, finding the perfect sound is as simple as search, preview, download. First, choose between sound effects, samples, or SoundSets (help me choose). Then simply:

  • SEARCH. Our search engine allows you to search by category or keyword.
  • PREVIEW. Every one of our sounds can be previewed before you buy them, so you always get exactly the sounds you need.
  • DOWNLOAD. We offer only professional-quality sounds, which can be downloaded in all the standard file formats. Your sounds are automatically stored in your SOUNDBAY™ enabling you to store, organize, access and re-download them from anywhere.

Our global network of top producers and sound designers has its fingers on the pulse of the latest audio technology and trends, ensuring that we have the widest range of fresh sounds for all your production needs. Our catalogue is consistently updated and available to you 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week from any Internet connected computer. Our dynamic search engine makes it easy to find the right sounds to fit your specific needs when you need it most.

02:What's the difference between sound fx, samples, and SoundSets?

Sound Effects are sounds, noises, foley and ambiences for sound design and post. Examples include gunshots, footsteps, dog barks, and the ambience of a New York street corner. Sound effects are typically used in films, television shows, videogames, corporate presentations and home movies.

Samples are musical loops, hits, instruments and sound banks for all software and samplers. Examples include a drum loop, a single guitar note, and an entire piano patch with dozens of keymapped samples for specific soft samplers. Sonomic offers several different sample formats and types; click here for help figuring out which one is right for you. Samples are typically used to create music.

SoundSets are convenient sets of 5 - 25 samples or sound effects grouped together around a common theme. SoundSets can save you both money and time, since you get all the sounds you need, all at once, for discounted price. Examples of Sample SoundSets would be a Blues Guitar SoundSet that includes several different blues guitar loops or a Jazz Kit SoundSet that includes all the drum sounds of a classic jazz drum kit. Sound Effects SoundSets might include a Door Slam SoundSet featuring a dozen different door slams, ranging from wooden doors slammed lightly to metal doors slammed hard.

03:Can you help me figure out which sample format choose?

Sure! Here's a handy guide:

Loops are samples that can be repeated, such as a drum beat, a bass line, or a guitar link.

Apple Loops are your best bet if you need loops for Garage Band, Logic, Soundtrack, or Final Cut Pro. Apple Loops will also work in any other software that supports AIFF format, though not all Apple Loops features (such as pitch and time shifting) may be supported in that software.

ACID Loops are the way to go if you're using Sony's ACID software, or one of the many other applications that support ACID loops or WAV loops.

One Shots are single hits, such an individual guitar note or snare drum hit. All One Shots are available in both WAV and AIFF formats - you can choose which one you want to download after you've purchased the sound.

Multisamples are complete keymapped instrument banks, available for most soft samplers, including Reason/NNXT, EX24, HALion, Kontakt, SampleCell, and MachFive.

04:How do I search for sounds?

Click on Search Tips for help on searching for sounds.

05:Where do your sounds comes from?

The Online Library's sample and sound effects are provided by the world's most popular and critically acclaimed libraries. We offer the complete catalogs of Sound Ideas, The BBC Sound Effects Library, Valentino, Zero G, Time+Space, Sampleheads, Noise Generator, and many other top libraries. Click here for a complete list of our sound providers.

06:How is the sound quality of the downloaded sounds?

All preview files are heavily compressed so that they will stream more quickly. Download sound files are NOT compressed - they are CD quality or better. When you download a sound, you are getting the full resolution sound file (44.1 or 48 KHz, 16 bit, Wav/Aiff). If you're ever dissatisfied with a sound for any reason, we'll gladly give you a refund.

07:What is the typical file size of your sounds, and how long will they take to download?

Our samples and sound effects range in size from a few KB to more than 10 MB, depending on length, bit rate, and frequency. Most of our samples and sound effects are less than 1 MB. Our multisamples and SoundSets range in size from 1MB to upwards of 30MB, with the average file size around 6MB. The time it takes to download a sound will depend on the size of that sound and your connection speed. On average, downloading a 1 MB file from Sonomic should take around one minute on a 56k modem.

08:What are the system requirements for using Sonomic?

Any fairly recent Macintosh (OS 9/X) or Windows (98, 98SE, 2000, XP) computer can use Sonomic. Make sure you have cookies and javascript enabled on your browser. You will also need either QuickTime or Windows Media Player to listen to preview files.

09:When I try to download sounds to my Macintosh, they just play instead of downloading.

To fix this, you will need to change the file helper settings on your browser. Click here to learn how.

10:I can't find the sounds I downloaded on my Macintosh.

First make sure that the sounds are actually downloading by checking your download manager to see if they appear there. If you're sure the sounds are downloading but can't find them, you will most likely need to verify/change your download options setting on your browser by following these steps:

1. Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu.
2. In the browser preferences window, go to "Receiving Files" and click "Download Options".
3. The location where you're sounds are saving to will be under the "Download Folder" heading. You can change this by clicking "Change Location".
4. If it still seems that the sounds are not saving to this folder, you may need to select "Always download files to the download folder" under the "Download Destination" heading.

11:What is the SOUNDBAY™?

Sonomic provides each subscriber with their own SOUNDBAY™ for as long as they have their subscription. The SOUNDBAY™ is where all of the files you purchase from Sonomic can be accessed. The SOUNDBAY™ allows you to sort, preview, organize, and download your files. You may access your SOUNDBAY™ by clicking on SOUNDBAY™ link on top of the page. You must sign-in in order to access your sounds from your SOUNDBAY™.

If you purchase sounds individually rather than with a subscription, the sounds you buy will be in your SoundBay for three days (72 hours) from the time of purchase. After this, they will be deleted from your SoundBay.

12:Can I transfer sounds that I have not purchased from Sonomic into my SOUNDBAY™?

Only Sonomic files can be stored and accessed from your SOUNDBAY™. You cannot import MP3s, other WAV or AIFF files, or any other files.

12:What are downloadable CDs?

Downloadable CDs give you an entire CD of full-quality sounds delivered right to your hard drive with just a single click. Every single sound and sample from the original CD is included at the exact same quality. The only thing you don't get is the hassle of going out and buying CDs (or waiting for them to be delivered).

And remember, all Downloadable CDs are covered by Sonomic's legendary 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. If you're not completely satisfied for any reason, we'll promptly refund your money. No haggling, no arguing, and no fine print.

SOUND EFFECTS SUBSCRIPTION QUESTIONS

20:What are rollover downloads and how do they work?

Rollover downloads mean that you get to use all the downloads you pay for with your Monthly Sound Effects Subscription, even if you have some slow months when you don't need any sounds. If you don't use all your downloads one month, the unused downloads will "rollover" and be added to the downloads you have the next month. There is no limit to how many rollover downloads you can accumulate, so if, for example, you don't use your subscription for six months, you will have 60 rollover downloads.

21:What's the Setup Fee?

The Setup Fee is a one-time charge for activating your Monthly Sound Effects Subscription. You only have to pay the Setup Fee the first month you activate your account; in subsequent months you will be billed only the $29.99 subscription fee. The Setup Fee is waived for Annual Subscriptions.

If you choose to purchase sounds individually rather than subscribing, there is no Setup Fee.

22:If I cancel my monthly sound effects subscription and sign up again later, do I have to pay another Setup Fee?

Yes. To avoid paying a new Setup Fee, you must keep your Monthly Sound Effects Subscription active. Remember that even if you don't use your account one month, your downloads will rollover to the next month, so it's worth continuing your account.

23:If I sign up for a sound effects subscription plan, can I still buy samples or SoundSets?

Yes, you can still buy samples or SoundSets if you sign up for a sound effects subscription plan, but you cannot use your sound effects subscription credit to purchase the samples or SoundSets. To purchase samples or SoundSets, simply add them to your cart and check them out.

24:How do I cancel my subscription?

You may cancel your subscription at any time by calling 1-877-766-6642 (toll free within the United States), or 212-604-0272. You may also cancel your account by emailing support@sonomic.com, but please be sure to allow 48 hours for your request to be processed.
